Travel Questions
How do I find the Villas Del Mar?
You will be met at the airport by one of our on site property managers who will drive you to your villa and introduce you to the house and the staff. On the way to the Villas they will be glad to stop at the supermarket so you can get a few groceries.
Are there direct flights from the US to Roatan?
There are many option via United, Delta, American and Avianca Airlines. Roatan is easily accessible from the US with direct flights from Houston on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays (2 flights) and Sundays on United Airlines. Check their web site for details depending on the season. Delta Airlines offers direct flights from Atlanta on Saturday. Avianca Airlines/TACA fly from Miami and through San Salvador, and west coast cities. Flights from Newark NJ. are opperated by United Airlines. American Airlines flys from LaGuardia NY through Miami to Roatan. Daily flights on United and American are available through San Pedro Sula on the mainland, with a short connecting flight to the island.

There are also charter flights from Toronto with Sun Wing Airlines (seasonal).

Questions about the Villas
Is there grocery shopping nearby?
There are two well-stocked supermarkets on the island which carry a fair range of American goods, but are obviously more expensive than in the US. Chicken, seafood of all types, fruit and vegetables are in abundance. There is also a good selection of Store Brands and Central American brands. Liquor and beer is significantly cheaper than back home. Eldon’s, located in French Harbour, is the closest supermarket to Villas Del Mar.

The Bulk Gourmet has a great selection of wines, and meats. Produce is best found at the small vegatable stands either in Oak Ridge or Bario Las Fuertes.

What should I pack?
Whatever clothes you bring will be too much. Formality is nonexistent on Roatan. Bring your swimsuit. Don’t forget a supply of insect repellent- we use the spray bottles of "Off"- and don’t forget your suntan lotion! There are several well stocked supermarkets on Roatan and even a specialty goumet shop.

A simple checklist to better prepare you for your trip:

  • Medication: Plan to bring all of your own medication, even the common over the counter variety. Pack mosquito repellent spray and lots of sun screen.
  • Camera: Be sure to bring your digital camera. This will be a vacation you’ll not soon want to forget! A disposable underwater camera is also a great idea.
  • A small flashlight: Many of the islands smaller restaurants are not well lit. A small flashlight will really help along small, narrow paths.
  • Favorite books, videos and music: Great for when you are relaxing in the afternoons.
  • Bring: your local drivers license, especially if you are driving a car.
  • "C" card: Required card for all certified divers who do not need instruction.
  • A spare Xerox copy: of your passport.
  • Money: Only bring US dollars and/or lempiras. None of the island banks will accept any other forms of currency. Leave your checkbook at home. These may get lost or stolen, and personal checks are not accepted at any of the local banks. Travelers Checks are not accepted any where on Roatan. Bigger stores will accept your Debit Card for purchases.
  • Clothing: Think casual and comfortable! Shorts, T-shirts, bathing suits and sandals are the norm. We also recommend that all expensive jewelry be left at home.
  • Towels: We provide all beach towels.
  • Snorkel Gear: We provide a full range of snorkel gear.
  • iPod: The Villas have an iPod connection to the stereo systems.
What activities should I plan?
  • Book a massage, a manicure or one of the other services offered by our on-site spa, Spa Tranquilidad.
  • Visit the quaint village of Oakridge, some ten minutes drive away.
  • Take a water taxi through the mangrove canals and see the houses built on stilts over the water.
  • Book the Shaya Manzi for a day trip to one of the surrounding islands or cays.
  • Have lunch in one of the great little restaurants close by. One of our favorites is Cal’s Cantina, amazing views, great food and price. Or there is BJ’s, a funky island spot on the water in Oak Ridge.
  • Take the car to colorful West End with its bars, restaurants, dive shops and souvenir stores.
  • Swing through the treetops on Roatan’s great Canopy Tour. It is located on the road to West Bay, and the second is located 15 minutes west of the Villas just before Fantasy Island.
  • Go diving on the incredible coral reef that surrounds the island. Not a diver? No problem! Take a course while you’re here with one of the many professional dive shops. Two dive shops are located within 10 minutes of the Villas.
  • Go golfing - Fuego del Mar has a corporate membership at The Black Pearl Golf Course located on Roatan’s beautiful North Shore. Our guests receive preferential tee time reservations!
  • Relax on the beautiful sandy beach at West Bay.
  • Maybe just stay at home, enjoy the view and grill lobster or fresh fish bought from the local fishermen.
  • For additional information on where to go and places to eat, etc. see our Roatan Info page.

“ We just got back from staying at Fuego del Mar (also rented Mariposa and Brisas) -- there were 19 of us in all. Fabulous accommodations and the staff was fabulous. The personal chef, Rosa, puts together simple island inspired meals that are better than anywhere else on the island. Subway diving is a top notch diving outfit and will pick you up at the Fuego dock for diving excursions. We dove with Osmand and can’t say enough about his experience & knowledge of the reefs and Roatan. He was a terrific DM. Since this is a quieter side of the island, you escape the cattle boats and overcrowded dive sites. The diving is great around the entire island. There is one road -- can’t get lost -- if you want to take the car out for an excursion, or you can hire a driver. West bay is a bit far -- 40 minutes -- but would be worth one or two day trips. Turquoise Bay is a quick hop via car. If you want more nightlife and a beach then stay in West Bay or West End. If you want hospitality, service, and a tranquil place to catch up with friends or family, you can’t get much better than Fuego del Mar. ”
